Meet the Team @ Cozy: Marketing and Communications

Shirley Chan, Head of Marketing and Communications

Shirley has lived in and around New York for most of her life, and recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied English at Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York.

How would you describe your job at Cozy?
My job is using what I know every day, finding out what I don’t know, and then learning really quickly and using that as well. Specifically, heading up Marketing and Communications. What I’m trying to do is to tell as many people as possible what Cozy is, what we make, and why they should care.

What is your favorite part of working at Cozy?
Coffee! Just kidding! Cozy is a bootstrap startup – it’s not a startup in the way people think about it. These days, tech startups are huge, flashy ideas that get funded by investors. We started off with customers that had a real need for our product, bringing in funds on Kickstarter to make sure it got made because they needed a product like MagCozy. So from day 1, it’s been a profitable company, built on the idea that we’re creating things that people really need, instead of making junk that will eventually just gather dust in a drawer somewhere.

I like the challenge, and being proud that that’s where we’re coming from as a company. We’re not a “sexy” company – we’re not built on a flashy idea – but we’re making little, simple things that make life better. At the heart of what I do, it’s about talking to people and telling them why what we do matters in their life. It’s not “sexy”, but it’s thoughtful.

What music are you embarrassed that you like listening to?
The Pussycat Dolls. All of it.

Which actress/actor would play you in the movie about your life?
Morgan Freeman

If you had a theme song play every time you entered a room, what would it be?
It depends on my mood. “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers

Melanie Chong, Marketing and Communications Intern

Melanie is a San Francisco Bay Area native. She is currently studying Psychology at UC Berkeley.

How would you describe your job at Cozy?
As of now, my job has been a huge learning experience. As the Marketing and Communications intern, I spend a lot of time finding and creating content for our social networks, content that is fun and interesting, but also helpful for the people who read it. It’s not always about selling as many products as possible – if by the end of the day someone reads a tech tip on our Twitter that helped them to simplify their life, that is a victory.

What is your favorite part of working at Cozy?
I love the work environment that is fostered here. It feels a lot less like work when you and your team really believe in the product that you’re marketing. We also have team BBQs, so I’d say it’s a toss up between the two.

What book are you reading right now?
The subtitles of “Desperate Housewives” on Netflix

What is your favorite website?
Tumblr

What is your spirit animal?
Giant pandas. They spend all of their waking hours eating - that’s my dream life.
